Bass River Recreation Area in Ottawa County Michigan

June 18 2012 We dug deep into Bass River Rec Area, looking for an elusive orchid of any sort.  And believe it or not...we found Loesel's Twayblade (Liparis loeselii)!

This is the area we found the orchids.

Here are a few more pictures from that day.

What a fun day, Bass River Rec Area is high on my lists of favorite places to hunt wildflowers.

Beautiful finds! I can't wait to get out there and start orchid hunting. I have a couple of promising spots in mind.

Thanks Allen, the twayblade were really hiding in with the other plants. They were smaller than I expected, I did put a key in one picture but only the key was in focus.
We used the field guide Orchids of the North Woods by Kim and Cindy Risen. It is an easy to use orchid guide, mostly for Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan, and parts of Canada.
Thanks for stopping by.

Hey Dave, you are right - it was very exciting finding a new plant, just growing there all on its own. I have always wanted to find a twayblade, now I have!
That orchid book is great even for beginners like me, it has what you need to know about each orchid on its own page.
Thanks for stopping by.
