Spring Wildflowers in Southwest Michigan


April 17, 2015  We visited Cass and Berrien Counties in southwest Michigan where the spring wildflowers bloom about a week earlier than in Ottawa County.  It is about a 100 mile drive south to see these flowers so we want to make sure something is blooming.  I read photographer Mark Cassino's blog post (http://www.markcassino.com/b2evolution/index.php) that the spring ephemeral wildflowers were indeed blooming.
 It was a beautiful day, blue sky and lots of sunshine.  Marie and I walked slowly through the woods.  I enjoyed every step.

      Thanks Mike. So have you and Kathy found some wildflowers blooming? Two large snappers were sitting on logs at Square Pond Dowagiac Woods!
      We saw 76 degrees that day but not now.

      We made one trip down to Dowagiac and Trillium Ravine already. Lots of Harbinger of Spring and Hepatica, Purple Cress, Cutleaf Toothwort, Spring Beauty, etc. Nothing is blooming up here in the north yet.

    Last year, we saw acres of Hepatica blooming. This year, it was acres of Anemones! Dutchman's Breeches and Squirrel Corn covered the ground, too. We stopped counting the Bloodroot. We saw Spring Beauty, Toothwort, violets, Marsh Marigold, and Yellow Trout Lily. Trillium were starting. Harbinger-of-Spring was ending. The unusual flowers of Blue Cohosh. The birds and frogs were singing, the sun was shining, and it was warm. Ah, Spring! M :)
