Autumn Coralroot Orchid - September 8 2021 - Ottawa County Michigan
In the photo below you can see how many of these orchids are growing alongside the trail. Most don’t bloom at all. I have visited this orchid several times this month. They are very small plants and tiny flowers.

Nice shot of the coralroot Chris! I'm wondering how many times I've walked right by them, thinking they were seedpods of some other plant!
Neat! I don't know anything about coralroot orchid (or any other orchids for that matter). Are they rare? You sound pretty excited to have found one in bloom. :)
Thanks Allen. Beechdrops have me looking twice sometimes if they are small. Beechdrops are usually much taller than coralroot.
There are so many coralroot along this one trail, and they seem to grow no farther than a foot or two from the edge of the trail. I have looked off the trail farther and haven’t found them. I’m wondering if they like a bit of disturbance.
Sister in the Mid-west I have been finding more of these orchids in the last few years, I have spotted them at several parks here in Ottawa County. Conditions need to be just right for them to bloom. They lack true roots but have an unground stem. The flower is about 1/8 inch.
I have never seen one with this many petals. Several times I have taken a picture with my camera and would only see that the orchid was blooming when I saw it on the monitor.
Now I have been using my phone camera which I can check the photo on the spot. I think orchids are special, maybe because they are a bit more rare. Also one of my sisters has grown orchids for 60 years, hers are the big beautiful orchids. She can grow anything, me not so much.
