Hoffmaster State Park March 4, 2013

We had a day at the beach today.  No swimsuits, more like snowsuits.  The temperature was
19 degrees when we started our walk from the entrance to Hoffmaster State Park camping area near Muskegon, Michigan.

 Lake Michigan
Little Black Creek coming across the beach to Lake Michigan.

These deer were far south of us on the beach.  The smokestack is at Port Sheldon about 17 miles south of us.
Deer heading back to the woods.
Sand and ice.
 Feathered ice.

Little Black Creek at Hoffmaster State Park.

What a great way to spend 3 hours outside with sunshine, blue sky, and ice.  We are lucky.

Here are a few more pictures of the "feathered ice"...

And a few more of the deer...

That feathered ice is really unusual-I don't think I've ever seen anything like it. I wonder what the deer get out of being on a beach. Just looking for a drink?

Hi Allen- yes the feathered ice was sticking straight up in the air. Maybe two inches, I didn't put a quarter next to it for size. It was so bright at the time I couldn't see if I got a clear shot, I do have a few more pics of that ice. We were wondering how it formed.
As far as the deer, I thought they were going to the open water to drink, but I'm not sure if they could reach it, but I guess they know what they are doing. They could have been a mile away, I'm not sure.
Thanks for stopping by.

Wow! I don't know which surprises me more, the deer on the beach, or the feathered ice. Both are great captures of something rare! It was a beautiful day on Sunday, but that wind was chilly!

Thanks Chuck. Even though it looks like we were out on the ice we had solid ground under our feet at all times. This same day some one got washed off an iceberg in Grand Haven, they were rescued.

Jerry is it unusal for the deer to go out on the ice like that? With the icebergs I doubt they could have gotten a drink but maybe.

I added more pictures to the end of the post.

The ice was interesting. I'm not sure how it formed.

We also saw 7 large osprey (I think they were osprey) flying around but didn't get a decent shot of one.

Thanks for stopping by.
