Dowagiac Woods

 Dowagiac Woods April 6 2021

Marie took me south (85 miles) to Dowagiac Woods to see spring wildflowers.  It was a beautiful day, even a tad bit warm (80 Degrees).  The wildflowers were blooming and the frogs were singing.

Hepatica is my favorite spring wildflower.  At Dowagiac Woods the ground is covered with them and Spring Beauty, Purple Cress, Dutchman's Britches, Bloodroot, Wild Ginger, Harbinger of Spring, Trout Lily, Blue-Eyed Mary, Marsh Marigold, Buttercup, Mayapple...

There are so many variations of Hepatica found here, I especially like the dark purple.

We also saw...

 Another fun adventure!

Wow! We were there just yesterday and you've already posted! T liked your photos, too. He thinks we make up the names of the wildflowers. Blue-eyed Mary, Dutchman's Breeches, Bloodroot, Trout Lily? Thanks for the memories! M :)

Wow, you're racing ahead of us! I didn't even see a trout lily leaf yesterday when I visited their spot. And you have violets already! I haven't seen a single one yet.
Thanks for showing these. They made my heart beat a little faster in anticipation!

Dowagiac Woods is usually a week to 10 days ahead of our bloom time here near Grand Haven. Although I do have hepatica, Bloodroot, and Spring Beauty blooming in my small wildflower patch here in my woods.
We had a thunderstorm and rain Monday then two days of 80 degrees! That really made a difference, it has been quite dry.
Glad you liked seeing the flowers and soon we will see yours!
🙂

Yes, only yesterday! Thank you for driving me there and home again. I probably wouldn’t go without you. Who else would drive four hours to walk 1.5 miles! Of course it took 3 hours to walk that 1.5 miles!

Today I walked at Rosy Mound with Betsy and saw lots of hepatica blooming. Tonight I walked with Mike at Stearns Creek and saw no flowers blooming.
Where to next!

Big Brother! I didn't know until now that you really are one of my big brothers. I will be planting trees at Happy Day Acres next week, maybe you will give us time off to look at the Trailing Arbutus!
I will also look up 2012 photos.

I was at Dowagiac Woods on Tuesday, 5/4. Most of what you saw is still blooming except the Dutchmen's Breeches. I did see a low ground cover that looks similar to a violet but has a monkey-shaped flower. I can't find anything similar online. I'm not sure how to post the photo here so I'll send one to your email.
